About Dentistry from the Heart

Dentistry from the Heart (DFTH) is a charitable organization based in Florida. They work with family dentistries across the country to provide free dental care to those in financial need and who could not otherwise afford those services. Clinics, including Lake Jackson Family Dentistry offices, volunteer their time to host these events. Services are provided free of charge to those who are 18 years of age or older and who cannot afford dental care. Procedures performed include fillings, extractions, and cleanings.

Dr. Vincent Monticciolo founded DFTH 17 years ago, wanting to give back to the community that had treated him and his dental staff so well. He hoped to inspire other clinics to generously give back to their communities as well. Since its founding, the organization has extended its reach internationally, helping thousands of patients and giving away millions of dollars in free dental care.

While patients are required to provide identification at some clinics, they are not required to fill out lengthy forms or submit proof of income for pre-approval. This can be a huge relief to those in low-income households, who may have been dealing with dental pain or other oral health issues for some time. Most patients seen by DFTH programs across the country opt for extraction, to treat previously undiagnosed dental disease. Other patients without the need for extraction tend to request cleanings, as they can prolong the length of time between required dental visits.

Dentists involved in these events tend to educate themselves on other low cost or free services in the area, so they can make referrals if patients require additional services. For example, some regions have free clinics that come around occasionally working out of the local public health unit. Other areas have dental schools, which may offer their services to patients on a sliding scale based on income.

The organization gets local and regional media involved, to help reach those who are in need of these services the most. DFTH’s mission is to give everyone a beautiful smile and to reach out to those who are unable to afford it. They run events across Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Canada, as well as the United States. Each year the events become increasingly successful, with more clinics and volunteers joining in. As a result, the charity has been able to help thousands of patients achieve a beautiful smile and address potential serious dental health issues.

Recent Years’ Success at All Smiles

All Smiles Dentistry is proud to have hosted three events since 2015, with a growing number of patients seen each time. Our Lake Jackson dentist, dental assistants, and hygienists are joined by those from across the area offering their services to those in need, without cost. In 2016, our 55 volunteers saw 97 patients and performed 179 procedures. Last year in 2017, we saw 114 patients and performed 262 procedures. Our staff and volunteers are happy to be able to give back to the Lake Jackson community.
